Otaru Canal


The beautiful Otaru is nestled on the sea of Japan. Famous for seafood (especially crab and sushi). Otaru is popular with tourists from all over Japan and the world. Otaru is close to a number of ski areas within a 1 hour drive that all receive great snow and have amazing terrain including Kiroro, Sapporo Kokusai and Teine.

For those interested in other options besides skiing why not venture to Otaru Beer which is located right on the canals for weiss, pilsner or kolsch or a day trip to Nikka Whiskey Distillery, Yoichi and learn why Japanese Whiskey is in demand all over the world,try you hand at sushi making and visit a Sake Distillery.

Connect a short stay in Otaru at the start or end of your time in NISEKO and enjoy the snow, food, shopping and the historic canals. We recommend a 3-4 night stay in Otaru.

Deer in Furano


Travel to Central Hokkaido from Sapporo or Niseko to the town of Furano. Experience Asahidake Ropeway for a full back-country adventure, the long and hidden tree runs of Furano, Tomamu and Kamui. Soak in the onsens after a long day on the mountain enjoying the uncrowded resorts and beautiful scenery.

HME recommends at least 4 nights in the Central Hokkaido area, stay in either Furano or Asahikawa or both.
